Rather than permanent nudity, I like the idea of females being required to strip any time, any place.

A number of ladies are wandering around a supermarket. A bell rings, and they all strip naked.

At a restaurant, the bell sounds, and the waitresses and female customers all strip.

There is a time limit of two minutes after the bell sounds. Anyone taking too long will spend a day naked in a cage.

The more power women have in society, the less clothing they wear. Consider Saudi Arabia versus western societies, or how Finland’s female prime minister wore a blazer with nothing underneath or how rich and powerful Madonna produced a book of naked pictures of herself. It seems to be a general law. The ultimate example of it is the remote town of Lilejungwe, hidden away in the Sahara desert. The first thing to be noticed by a visitor—inevitably a woman, since male tourists are banned—is that all female citizens are completely naked, whereas men and boys are clad in desert robes, usually blue. The second thing to be noticed is that women are in charge. Women run the town and do all the work. Males neither work nor have any say in the debating chamber. They also defer to their wives in private matters. A third thing the visitor will notice is that men are rare. Only about one in twenty of the town’s roughly 10,000 inhabitants are male. That’s 500 men and boys for 10,000 women and girls. Let me explain how this situation arose and then I will tell you more about the town’s customs.

In 1877 a regiment of the French Foreign Legion was garrisoned at what was then called Fort Sainte-Marie, hidden by sand dunes around an oasis in the Sahara. Apart from the soldiers, there were a few laundrywomen and the officers’ wives, seventeen of them, along with the colonel’s twelve-year old son. One day the regiment marched out on a two-week expedition to deal with desert marauders, while a sergeant was left behind with sixteen men to defend the fort. The regiment never returned, being ambushed and put to death. Only one corporal made it back to report the terrible news. Two men were sent to get help, a journey of several hundred miles, but were never heard of again, probably killed by bandits. Over subsequent weeks, discipline deteriorated in the fort. Someone broke into the wine cellar. The colonel’s wife attempted to impose her authority, but the fort descended into anarchy and the women were raped by drunken soldiers. One by one, the men began to die, some in brawls, some from drink, some from being shot by the women. Eventually the only male left alive was the colonel’s young son. The women waited for help to come, not knowing that a garbled message had reached the French headquarters from an Arab trader about the fort being wiped out so there was no point in rescue. In the meantime, they began to grow food and later some of the women gave birth. They also grew accustomed to wearing less and less clothing in the heat. At first, they were in pantaloons and blouses. Then some of the women started going topless. Later some sunbathed naked, and didn’t bother to dress again as they walked around the fort. The boy was shy and dressed normally among the increasingly naked women. As he came of age, some of the women seduced him and had his babies.

One day, nearly ten years later, a moment they had all been dreading arrived, when clouds of dust and the sound of camels’ hooves announced the arrival of militant tribesmen. The naked women screamed, ran, or huddled together, sure they were going to be raped or killed. One of the former washerwomen, braver than the rest, strutted forward, big breasts bouncing. She spoke the tribesmen’s language and told them to leave right away. Instead, they halted there on their camels, wide-eyed, drinking in the sight of bare breasts, generous Victorian-style bushes of dark, curly pubic hair, and ample, naked bottoms. They could not believe what they were seeing. Then their leader caught up and pushed through to the front. “W’allah!” he exclaimed and started talking excitedly to a holy man at his side. Shortly after, he fired his rifle in the air and shouted at his men to withdraw, which they all did. The washerwoman said that the chieftain had said the naked women were djinn, supernatural spirits, who would suck out their lifeforce, enslave them and destroy their lives, and the imam had backed this up, saying that any man who looked at naked women in this life was a sinner who would not be granted virgins in paradise. After that, two things happened. First, the local tribesmen left the fort alone, and second the women of the fort made it a rule to stay naked and so frighten the tribesmen away.

As time went on, the children began to grow up, and the women faced a dilemma. If the males were allowed to grow into men, they would inevitably come to dominate the community, and the nice, female-oriented world they had become accustomed to would cease to exist. After much debate, it was agreed that, henceforward, male babies would be exposed in the desert for 3 nights and only if they survived that ordeal would they be allowed to live and join the community. This ensured the low sex ratio of 20 females to 1 male, which meant that men could never become strong enough to take over. It was also agreed that men would not be allowed to work or have positions of authority. Some years later, when some of the boys had grown to adulthood, they began stripping off and wandering around naked like the women. This the women didn’t like, and it led to another major rule of the community, which was that, from the day they were born, only females were allowed to be naked, and males had to remain decently clothed. By this time, female nudity was so much the norm that everyone interpreted the rule to mean that females were obliged to be naked just as males had to be clothed, and that is how they live now.

So that is the history of the town of Lilejungwe and how its peculiar customs evolved. In a future post, I will describe the daily life of the town.

In general I like the idea that women generally do not wear clothes. Actually I sometimes try to imagine how life would be like this. But what I do not like about most fantasy worlds in that regard is that women are not only required to be naked but usually they are also inferior and objectified. Surely, this might come naturally with the idea for many but for me this spoils the fantasy almost completely. I prefer to imagine a world where female nudity is the norm but they are treated equally to the men otherwise. This would be even much more appealing to me. There was once a tumblr about an island called Fenuo which was a bit like that. But unfortunately it's gone with all the fun stuff on tumblr now.

A little fun fact... last year my (male) friend and I temporarily shared an apartment for a few weeks. We used the situation for a little experiment and tried to live out that idea a little bit though only in the boundary of the apartment and within ourselves. We made the rule that nudity should be mandatory for me in the apartment at all times. And it felt absolutely incredible. I really enjoyed this casual nudity situation. And the fact that it was mandatory for me added nicely to the experience. And basically I never really gave up that rule for myself even after he moved out again.

We used the situation for a little experiment and tried to live out that idea a little bit though only in the boundary of the apartment and within ourselves. We made the rule that nudity should be mandatory for me in the apartment at all times. And it felt absolutely incredible. I really enjoyed this casual nudity situation. And the fact that it was mandatory for me added nicely to the experience. And basically I never really gave up that rule for myself even after he moved out again.  

I experienced the obligatory nudity with a clothed girl, but only during some weekends. She had a house out of town, and we walked through nature, me without clothes.
